Qualifications
Who Can Join Freemasonry?
Freemasonry is open to men of good character from all walks of life, regardless of race, religion, politics, or social standing. To be considered for membership at Lakewood Lodge #170, a petitioner must meet these requirements.
Male, 18 or Older
Freemasonry is a fraternal organization open to men who are at least 18 years of age. In Colorado, a man must be of legal adult age to petition for membership.
Belief in a Supreme Being
Freemasonry is not a religion, but it does require belief in a Supreme Being. Masons of every faith, including Christian, Jewish, Muslim, and Hindu, are welcome and practice their own faith independently.
Good Moral Character
Freemasonry seeks men of honest, upright character who are committed to living a moral and lawful life in their community.
Your Own Free Will
A man must come to Freemasonry of his own accord, uninfluenced by others. Membership is never solicited. You must choose to seek it for yourself.
The Path to Membership
How to Become a Freemason at Lodge #170
Joining Freemasonry is a deliberate, meaningful process. Here is what to expect from your first visit through your third degree.
Step 1
Attend a Meet & Greet
Come to our Tuesday evening events from 6:30 to 9:30 PM. Meet lodge members, ask questions, and get a feel for Lakewood Lodge #170. No obligation or prior knowledge required.
Step 2
Submit a Petition
When you are ready, you complete a formal petition for membership. Members of the lodge who have gotten to know you at our Tuesday events can sponsor your petition.
Step 3
Getting to Know You
Members of the lodge meet with you informally to learn about your character and your reasons for seeking membership. It is a friendly conversation rather than an interrogation, and mutual understanding is the goal.
Step 4
Lodge Decision
The members of Lodge #170 consider your petition together. Freemasonry has always held that a new brother should be welcomed by the whole lodge, not simply admitted by a committee.
Step 5
The Three Degrees
You receive the three degrees of Freemasonry: Entered Apprentice, Fellow Craft, and Master Mason. Each is a ceremonial experience rich in symbolism and moral instruction, and you progress at your own pace.
Step 6
Welcome to the Brotherhood
After being raised to Master Mason, you become a full member of Lakewood Lodge #170 and part of a lifelong brotherhood built on integrity, service, and the Masonic craft.

Our Tuesday evening events are relaxed and informal. No pressure and no ceremony, just a chance to spend an evening with the brothers of Lakewood Lodge #170 and decide whether Freemasonry is right for you.

What Happens

How much does it cost to join Freemasonry?
There is a one-time initiation fee and annual dues. Contact us directly for current figures. Freemasonry has never required wealth, and men of modest means have always been welcome in the craft.
Do I have to be Christian to join?
No. Freemasonry requires belief in a Supreme Being but is not affiliated with any specific religion. Masons of all faiths are active members worldwide. The fraternity is intentionally non-sectarian.
How much time does membership require?
As much or as little as fits your life. Lakewood Lodge #170 holds a monthly stated communication along with our Tuesday evening meet & greet events. Participation in additional activities is encouraged but flexible.
Can I ask a Mason to invite me?
Traditionally, Masons do not solicit membership. A man must seek it of his own free will. Attending our open meet & greet events is the natural way to connect with members and begin the process on your own terms.
What happens during the degree ceremonies?
The three degrees are ceremonial experiences rich in symbolism and moral lessons drawn from the traditions of medieval stonemasons. The ceremonies themselves are private, but the lessons center on integrity, brotherly love, and personal growth.
What is a Blue Lodge, and what are appendant bodies?
A Blue Lodge such as Lakewood Lodge #170 is where the three foundational Masonic degrees are conferred. Appendant bodies such as the Scottish Rite and York Rite offer additional degrees for Master Masons. The Blue Lodge is always the starting point.
