Community & Charity

Freemasonry’s most visible expression is service. Lakewood Lodge #170 is committed to making Lakewood, Colorado a better place — one act of charity at a time.

Relief — The Second Pillar of Freemasonry

Of Freemasonry’s three foundational principles — Brotherly Love, Relief, and Truth — it is Relief that most directly touches the community beyond our lodge walls.

Relief is not just financial giving. It is a posture — a readiness to serve, to help where help is needed, and to give without expectation of recognition or return.

Freemasonry’s Charitable Legacy

Freemasonry has one of the oldest and most significant charitable traditions of any fraternal organization in the world. Masonic lodges across the globe have historically supported hospitals, orphanages, schools, disaster relief funds, and community programs — long before government social safety nets existed. In the United States alone, Freemasons contribute hundreds of millions of dollars to charitable causes each year.

Charity Begins in the Lodge

At Lakewood Lodge #170, charitable work begins with our own brotherhood. Members in need — whether facing financial hardship, illness, or loss — can count on the lodge for support, assistance, and the kind of brotherly care that cannot be replaced by a check. From there, our charitable focus extends outward into the Lakewood community and beyond, through local initiatives and participation in statewide Masonic charitable programs.

Community Engagement

Beyond organized charitable giving, Lakewood Lodge #170 members are active in the Lakewood community as individuals — serving on civic boards, volunteering with local organizations, coaching youth sports, and contributing to the quality of life in the neighborhoods where we live and work. Freemasonry shapes the kind of men who do these things naturally.

How We Give Back

Community Initiatives

Charitable Giving

Lakewood Lodge #170 contributes to local and statewide charitable causes throughout the year. Our giving is guided by the Masonic principle of Relief — meeting genuine need with practical support, quietly and without fanfare. We participate in Grand Lodge of Colorado charitable programs and support causes that align with Masonic values of service and community care.

Education & Mentorship

Education has always been central to Freemasonry. Lodge #170 supports educational initiatives and the intellectual growth of our members through Masonic study, degree work, and lodge education nights. Our members also bring their commitment to education into the broader Lakewood community through mentorship, tutoring, and civic participation in local schools and youth programs.

Brotherhood in Need

When a brother or his family faces hardship — illness, loss, financial crisis — the lodge responds. This is one of the most ancient functions of a Masonic lodge, and it remains one of the most meaningful. Lakewood Lodge #170 maintains a culture of mutual support and care among its members, ensuring that no brother navigates life’s hardest moments alone.

Masonic Charity in Colorado

As a lodge chartered under the Grand Lodge of Colorado, Lakewood Lodge #170 is connected to a statewide network of charitable programs that extend our giving far beyond what any single lodge could accomplish alone.

Colorado Masonic Charities

The Grand Lodge of Colorado supports a range of charitable programs serving Colorado communities, from scholarships and educational grants to support for Masons and their families in need. Lodge #170 participates in and contributes to these programs, ensuring that our charitable impact reaches beyond Lakewood.

Scottish Rite & Shrine

Many Lodge #170 members are also affiliated with appendant Masonic bodies — including the Scottish Rite and the Shrine — whose charitable programs support children’s hospitals, speech therapy clinics, and other causes across the country. While these are separate organizations from Lodge #170, their missions reflect the same Masonic values of relief and service.
