History of Lakewood Masonic Lodge #170

History of Lakewood Lodge #170

Over 75 years of Freemasonry in Lakewood, Colorado. Chartered in 1946, Lodge #170 has been part of the fabric of this community for generations.

Founded in 1946

Lakewood Masonic Lodge #170 was chartered in 1946 under the Grand Lodge of Colorado, at a time when Lakewood was still a young and rapidly growing community on the western edge of the Denver metro area.

The lodge was founded by a group of brothers who believed that Lakewood deserved a local home for Freemasonry — a place where men of character could gather, grow, and serve their neighbors.

The Founding Era

1946 was a watershed year in American life. World War II had just ended, and veterans were returning home to build communities, start families, and create institutions. It was in this spirit that a group of men in Lakewood chose to establish a Masonic lodge — a place rooted in values of service, brotherhood, and moral development that had sustained men through difficult times for centuries.

Lodge Number 170

The number 170 reflects the lodge’s position in the chronological roll of lodges chartered by the Grand Lodge of Colorado. Lodge #170 was among the lodges established in the post-war expansion of Freemasonry in Colorado, a period when membership in fraternal organizations grew significantly across the United States.

The Grand Lodge of Colorado

Lakewood Lodge #170 operates under the jurisdiction of the Grand Lodge of Colorado, which was itself established in 1861 — the same year Colorado became a territory. The Grand Lodge sets standards, provides governance, and connects the lodges of Colorado into a unified brotherhood that spans the entire state.

Our Masonic Home

Lodge #170 & the Lakewood Masonic Temple

Lakewood Masonic Lodge #170 shares its home with sister lodges that have also served the Lakewood community through the decades. The building that houses our lodge is a testament to the enduring presence of Freemasonry in this part of Colorado — a physical anchor for our brotherhood in the community we serve.

Our lodge room has been the site of hundreds of degree ceremonies, stated communications, and special events over 75+ years. It is where brothers have been raised to Master Mason, where generations of officers have taken their chairs, and where the traditions of the craft have been passed from one generation to the next.
